拝啓時下益御清栄奉賀候、陳者弊店義是迄既ニ御地市場ノ嗜好ヲ詳知

  Dear sirs
  I am instructed by the president《(of脱)》 this association to acknowledge the receipt《(of脱)》 your favor dated the 26th January, containing the price list of spanish stripes and a statement of other articles for our markets, and also of a separate parcel of 14 samples for the former article,and to inform you《(that to comply with your脱)》 request, all things from you have been transferred to Messrs.
  Okura & Co. import & export merchants, whose report, herewith sent, is hoped to prove service to you.

  for Japan.
  Cotton:―
  Grey, White, Plain, & Twilled will find market here. Among others, Grey is the most demanded.
  Drills will be salable; but Jeans have not been consumed by the Japanese until present, owing perhaps to their higher prices compared with the former.
  Cambrics, Muslins, Chintzes, Velveteens &c. are more or less demanded,
  Nearly all the imported cotton piece goods being from Great Britain, articles of other origins could also find markets here, provided they be possessed of the necessary qualities, patterns and prices rivalling the British made.
  Wollen:―Spanish Stripes
  None of those you sent as samples may suit the market here, especially as they are of the colours. Plain coloured flannels are rather preferred.
  But generally, plain coloured goods are less demanded than figured ones.
  Broad cloth, Medium cloth, Flannel, &c. can sell to certain extents, had the qualities and prices been suitable. We can't give our opinion about their salableness, there being no samples.
  Flannels of suitable colours and figures are extensively and Plain White Flannels to some extent, required.
  Cashmere, and Woollen Yarns.
  No demand for the former. The latter, however, can find a limited market, for the materials of the ladies net works.
  note:― Some consignments from abroad in woollen yarns for weaving, were found unsalable, which is, we believe, due to the scarcity of the looms in this country.
