Mr. Kyugoro Obata,
  Private Secretary to Viscount Shibusawa,
  No. 2, Kabuto-Cho, Nihonbashiku,
  Tokyo, Japan.
My dear Mr. Obata :
I am very much pleased at the privilege of writing you

concerning two gentlemen and their wives, who are traveling through Japan and of whom you might wish to know because of their particular station in life, and because I have practically induced them to spend a month in Japan. At this writing these friends are not acquainted with one another, but are traveling on the same steamer, and will arrive at Yokohama on the Steamer "President Taft" on April 4.
First, I would mention to you Mr. and Mrs. Francis S. Viele, who are leisurely traveling as far as Manila but intend to spend about one month in Japan, and very few days elsewhere. Mr. Viele is Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Arizona Power Company, and is one of the leading men of the State of Arizona, U.S.A. He is a power and mining engineer, and is a graduate of the Institute of Technology, Boston. I have interested him in the developments of the Institute of Chemical and Physical Research, and I do trust that your courtesy will enable him to get an idea of the Institute.
Also, Dr. and Mrs. C. LeRoy Lowman will arrive at Yokohama on the Steamer "President Taft" on April 4, and intend to stay until the 20th of April. They are going no further than Japan. Dr. Lowman is head of the Orthopaedic Hospital in Los Angeles, a very great institution, and is eminent in his profession as a bone specialist, with particular reference to the feet. He is also noted for his charitable work. Mrs. Lowman is very prominent in women's club circles, having been treasurer of the Friday Morning Club, one of the largest of its kind in America. Dr. Lowman is also interested in the Institute of Chemical and Physical Research, from the descriptions I have passed to him, with particular reference to Vitamin-A, which he feels is very essential to his work. Would you also be good enough to see also that this eminent surgeon is informed with respect to medical ideas.
I have presumed to write to you in these matters, not forgetting the real sense of gratitude and satisfaction I have had in meeting the internationally esteemed Viscount Shibusawa. Knowing that our esteemed friend desires his leisure as far as possible and that you handle certain phases of his community work, I have asked your good offices to assist our good friends both to enjoy their stay in Japan and to learn first-hand what I have come to admire.
Dr. and Mrs. Lowman and Mr. and Mrs. Viele are going to the Imperial Hotel on the day of their arrival, and will probably remain there four or five days.
I esteem your cordiality very highly, and trust I am not

seriously trespassing on your time in suggesting the above.
My good wife and myself can never forget the good will and hospitality of Viscount Shibusawa, and may he live long to witness the results of his efforts.
             Very sincerely yours,
                 S. L. KREIDER

Mr. S. L. Kreider,
  375 Pacific Electric Building.
  Los Angeles, Cal.
Dear Mr. Kreider,
Your esteemed letter of March 24, touching the visit of Mr. and Mrs. Francis S. Viele, and of Dr. and Mrs. C. LeRoy Lowman to Japan duly reached me, and I at once reported the

contents of your note to Viscount Shibusawa. He ordered me to do my best in doing what I can to make their visit comfortable and profitable. I first met with Mr. Viele in the Imperial Hotel. He told me then that Dr. and Mrs. Lowman started for the South. On the 14th of April, Dr. and Mrs. Lowman visited the Physical and Chemical Institute through the kindness of Viscount Shibusawa, and they inspected the factory of Vitamin A. They met also with Viscount Okochi, Director of the Institute. On the next day--namely the 15th (Friday), Dr. and Mrs. Lowman and Mr. Viele called on the Viscount at his Asukayama villa. Mr. Lowman did the talking. The Viscount was deeply interested in the work Dr. Lowman is engaged in, and a very lively conversation took place between the two philanthropists, Mrs. Lowman occasionally throwing her spicy remarks as wise American mistresses generally do when with their husbands.
Viscount Shibusawa wishes me to tell you that he was pleased to meet with your friends whom you virtually introduced to him.
Trusting this will find you in the best of health, I am
             Yours very truly,
               (Signed) K. Obata.
