是月、金子堅太郎飛鳥山邸ヲ訪フ。栄一病ヲ押シテ面会シ、アメリカ合衆国千九百二十四年移民法改訂ノ希望ヲ述ブ。

　その後今から三年前、忘れもせぬ九月の末頃渋沢君の病気が段々良くないと云ふことを聞いたので、取敢えず玄関迄行つて其容体丈けなりとも聞きたいと思ふて飛鳥山に行つた。何となれば阪谷君や小畑君が「実は一切面会を謝絶して居る処へ殊に貴下がお会ひになつては必ず国事に関する話が出るに相違ない。さうして病人が興奮して後で熱が高まるやうでは困るから」と云ふことを聞いて居つたからである。
　すると取次の人が一寸待てと云つて渋沢君に私が来たことを伝へると、渋沢君は会ひたいと云つて、態々表の応接間まで出て来られた上「自分は最早余命幾許もない体であるが、貴下はまだまだお若いのだから、何卒今後とも日米問題に就いて尽力せられ、切めてはアノ排日法規の但書だけでも削除されるやうに努力せられたい」と、呉々も依頼せられたので、私も克くその意を諒承して、お別れしたのが最後の面談となつたわけである。
　その渋沢君が逝かれて今や三年忌を迎へんとするに際し、日米関係は依然として好転の徴候をすら現さない。定めし渋沢君も地下で遺憾に思つて居られることであらうと、転た感慨に耐えない次第である、云々

　　………………Toward the close of September of 1931, the year the Viscount passed away, I went to Asukayama to inquire after his health. When I presented my card to the house-steward who knew me, he begged me to wait in the parlour until he took the card to the Viscount, saying it would make the Viscount angry, if he did not report to him that I was there. To my great surprise the Viscount left his room and being accompanied by his nurse walked into the room where I was waiting. There he spoke to me:
　　"It is very unlikely that I shall rally to take part in any active work. The Immigration Law of 1924 will remain as an irritant if not revised. You are much younger than I am and will be able to work out the final solution of this ominous problem. So far as I can see now, there is nothing which would jeopardize the historic good relations between our two countries if only this law were removed or revised. I sincerely hope that the American friends and you will closely cooperate to accomplish this object."
　　I never thought that this visit was to be the last, and that what he told me would be his final words ―― his last will and testimony to me !
