My dear Viscount Shibusawa:
　　After conferring with Baron Sakatani and Mr. Sakai, with their approval, I personally saw Prince Tokugawa and asked if he would be willing to become a member of our Advisory Council for St. Luke's Hospital. This morning I received a note from the Prince signifying his acceptance, and I have pleasure in enclosing herewith a copy of his letter to you as Chairman of the Council.
　　I am confident you will approve this addition to the Council, and if not asking too much, would you be kind enough, at your convenience, to send Prince Tokugawa a note thanking him for his kindness in accepting service on the Council, and expressing your approval, as our Chairman?
　　I wish to take advantage of this opportunity to express

 to you my deep gratitude and loyal affection for all you have done in the past for this Hospital, from the days when we were struggling for recognition, until the present. Your kindness, consideration, and sustained sympathy have been invaluable to this institution, and I will always hold in devoted memory the many times you have helped me, not only materially but in wise words of counsel and advice.
　　I am proceeding to the United States next Saturday for about three or four months, in an effort to raise more money for the new St. Luke's Hospital. We still need several hundred thousand dollars to complete the total million dollars required, and I hope that at least a part of this sum will be given during January and February in New York City, where a campaign will be conducted under the dircetion of a group of New York friends, a number of whom you know personally. I would ask the pleasure of an interview with you that I might express personally all of my appreciation and gratitude, but knowing you have not been well, I have refrained from making this request.

拝啓、阪谷男爵及阪井氏と協議の上、其同意を得て徳川公爵と会見致し、我聖路加国際病院の評議員を御引受被下候様願出候処、右御承諾被下候趣、今朝同公爵より書面入手致候に付、小生は同評議員長たる閣下に公爵の書翰の写一通貴覧に供候、閣下に於せられては新に同公爵の加入せられ候事を御賛成可相成と存候、就ては御手数誠に恐縮に存候得共、御便宜を以て右に対する礼状、同公爵宛御差出被下候様御願申上候
我病院が未だ微々たりし当時より今日に至るまで、常に多大の御尽力を忝ふせるに対し、此機会を以て深厚なる謝意と敬愛の念とを奉表候閣下の御親切と御同情とは到底計り知り難きもの有之、小生は閣下が単に物質的方面のみならず屡貴重なる御助言を御与へ被下候事を、常に記臆致し深く奉感謝候
小生は新聖路加病院の寄附金募集の為め、三・四ケ月の予定を以て来る土曜日米国へ向け出立可致候、必要なる壱百万弗計画を完成致す為

拝復、益々御清適奉賀候、然ば御出発前には御多用の処態々御来訪被下恐縮に存候、其後十一月十六日附の尊書をも入手致委細拝読致候、右により徳川公爵には今般国際病院評議員たる事を御承諾相成り候由を承知致、誠に結構の儀と老生も深く喜び居候、就ては過般御面晤の節も申上候通り、老生は此際同評議員長を辞し是非徳川公爵を御推挙申上度と存候間何卒御諒納被下度候、尤も老生は評議員長を辞し候とも、一評議員として従来の通り貴病院の為に微力を尽し候心組に御座候間、此辺の事は御含置被下度候
近日同公爵に会見致候都合に付、老生より親しく御懇請仕、是非御承諾を得度企念罷在候間此亦御含み被下度候、尚同公爵が評議員長としての実務に付ては、貴台御帰航後親しく御打合せの上と致度候へ共、予め同公爵の御承諾を得置度と存じ本書相認め候次第に御座候

Dear Viscount Shibusawa:
　　I was very much pleased to receive to-day your letter of December 25th and appreciate your kind thoughtfulness in writing me.
　　Please accept my most hearty congratulations and best wishes for the New Year. It was a satisfaction seeing you looking so well just before I left and I sincerely trust you have continued in good health during the present cold weather.
　　I understand your thoughtfulness in wishing to resign the Chairmanship of the Advisory Council in favor of Prince Tokugawa. You have always been so kind, helpful and devoted to the interest of St. Luke's Hospital that whatever you definitely decide I will accept with unquestioned faith that it is right. But I certainly earnestly hope that you will continue in your position of Chairman of the Committee because it was through your help and inspiration many years ago that we began our efforts to increase its usefulness as an international institution. It has been through your continued interest and assistance that the inspiration and success of the work has continued.
　　Not only personally but in the name of the Hospital, I feel the deepest appreciation and gratitude to you for all you have done and for what has been accomplished. You can readily understand, therefore, my hearty desire that you retain a position which is associated with our years of struggle and, in more recent times, our years of proportionate success.
　　I know you will always do your utmost for the interest of the Hospital as one of its Trustees and the knowledge that I can come to you for help and guidance is a continued encouragement and spur to me for better and bigger things for the Hospital.
　　Plans for raising money here in the United States are developing, not so rapidly as I wish, but I believe before long they will begin to bear some fruit. Appeals are so many and complex here in New York City that it is an exceedingly difficult matter to establish and maintain interest in an institution which is after all, geographically, quite faraway.
　　I hope to be back in Tokyo well before the summer.

先づ謹んで新年の御挨拶申述へ候、小生が日本を出発致候前、閣下には御壮康に被為亘候を御見受申上候が、其後寒気の候にも不拘引続き御勇健の事と奉存候
徳川公爵に対する御遠慮の意味にて評議員長を御辞任相成度御思召の由諒知仕候、閣下には聖路加病院の為め常に御親切に御後援被成下候に付き、閣下の御決定成され候事は何事にても正当なりとの信念により直ちに応諾可仕処には候得共、本病院が国際機関の一として有用なる機能を益々発揮せしむべく、私共が一段の努力を相加へ候は、数年前閣下よりの御援助に激励せられたる結果に外ならず候へば、従来の如く委員長の椅子に御留り被下候様奉懇願候、実は此事業の興隆と成功との継続せるは、全く閣下の御援助に基くものに御座候
小生一個人としてのみならず、同病院として小生は閣下の御努力と功績とに対し、深甚の謝意を表するものに候、右横の次第につき吾等多年の苦心と近年に於ける相当の成功とに関聯して、離るべからざる閣下の現位置に御留任被下度しとの小生の衷心よりの御願ひを御諒解可被下事と存候、閣下には一評議員として常に病院の為めに全力を御尽し可被下を承知致居候、又私が閣下の御援助と御指導とを願出候場合には、閣下は必ず小生の希望に応じ下さるべしとの確信は、病院の拡張並に改良上小生に取り、大なる奨励及鞭撻と可相成事と存候
米国に於ける募金計画は次第に進捗致し居候得共、思ふ様速かに参り不申候、乍併遠からず実を結ぶべき事を信じ申候、当紐育市に於ける寄附金募集は各方面より莫大に上り、且つ複雑を極め居候へば地理的に見て、遠隔の地に在る一病院の為めに、応募者を求め候事は極めて難事に候
小生は夏季までには東京へ帰着の予定に御座候

　　In accordance with instructions of the American Advisory Council for St. Luke's International Hospital, Tokyo, I have the honor to transmit to you the following message adopted by the American Advisory Council, at a meeting in the City of New York on June 7, 1926:
　　RESOLVED: That the American Advisory Council for St. Luke's International Hospital, Tokyo, has the honor to extend cordial greetings to the Japanese Advisory Council. It desires to express to the Japanese Council its sense of high privilege in cooperating with the Japanese Council, and assures the Council of its intention to render every possible assistance in developing plans for the permanent St. Luke's Hospital in Tokyo, as a practical demonstration of friendship and deepening goodwill between Japan and the United States.
　　It is hoped that the cooperation of these two Councils in helping to establish this great international humanitarian work will lead to results of the most far-reaching character in increasing the sympathy and cementing the friendship between the two great nations they represent.
　　In sending this message from the American Advisory Council, may I add my own personal greetings, my congratulations upon the great service you have rendered, and still render, to the cause of international goodwill, and my thanks for the courtesies you extended to me when I had the privilege of meeting you in Tokyo.

　「東京聖路加国際病院米国評議員会は、日本評議員会の諸氏に対し謹んで敬意を表す。本会は日本評議員会と提携し得る事を多大の特権とするものなり。而して同病院の拡張計画に対しては、日米両国の親善友誼を増進するの実際的方法として、能ふ限り援助を与ふべき希望を有する旨、日本評議員に対し確保す。
　右決議す」
此の両評議員会は相提携して、此大なる国際的仁慈の事業を遂行する事は、軈て両国間の同情を増加し、友誼を増進するが為めには、頗る顕著なる結果を齎らす所以にて、吾等の之れを希望する事頗る大なるもの有之次第に御座候
米国評議員会の決議を玆に伝達するに当り、小生よりも個人として御挨拶を申述べ、尚ほ閣下が国際親善の為め、従来も将来も共に大に御尽力被遊候事を謝し、併はせて小生が東京に於て会見の栄を得たる節多大の御厚意を忝うしたる事を奉深謝候、謹んで敬意を奉表候　敬具
