Herman F. Swartz, M. Sc. D.D.
Born 1871, Carlisle, Pennsylvania, son of Dr. Joel Swartz, descend of the early Palatine migration to Philadelphia, upon the revocation of the Edict of Nantes.
Graduate Pennsylvania College, 1891. Student in Economics at Columbia University, Universities of Berlin and Heidelberg. Student of divinity at Union Seminary, New York and Hartford Seminary. Wm. Thompson fellow, studied in Germany, France and Italy.
Social settlement worker in E. London, Paris and New York. Ordained at Boston, Mass. 1898. Secretary Congregational Home Missionary Society. Spec. Sec'y Congregational World Movement. Co-auther of Annuity Plan of Congregational denomination, now adopted by many other institutions. Secured $5,000,000 to endow the Annuity Plan. Since 1921 President Pacific School of Religion, Berkeley, California. Member of the Commission of Missions (American Board) of Congregational Churches. Late President of Berkeley Community Chest. Chairman committee on plans for future growth of Berkeley, etc.
