是日栄一、アメリカ合衆国ノ知人ジヤッジ・イー・エッチ・ゲーリー外二十四名宛ニ書面ヲ以テ、関東大震火災ノ状況ヲ報ジ、マタ同十三日、ロバーツ・エヌ・リンチ外二十名宛ニ電報ヲ以テ、同震火災ノ状況通報ト共ニ、アメリカ合衆国ノ援助ヲ依頼ス。

My dear Judge Gary,
　　I am sure that you had received my letter which I addressed you a few days ago with reference to the creation of a Joint High Commission. As you may have already learned through telegram of the earthquake which visited the city of Tokyo on the noon of September the first, it was indeed a dreadful event which shocked us to the very core of our existence. But that was not worst. The quake was followed by a mighty conflagration, which rose up almost simultaneously at seven different places. Out of the fifteen wards of the city, eight of them comprising about 600,000 homes were completely and miserably reduced to ashes, causing the death of innumerable men and animals. I was in my office at the moment when the event took place and it was badly damaged. It was almost a miracle that l could escape, without receiving a slightest harm. I returned my home at Asukayama in the afternoon of the same day and found the members of my families safe and the building itself slightly damaged. I am well and working for the aid of sufferers and the restoration of the city. Feeling that it is quite proper for me to send you a personal note regarding my safety, I am

拝啓、然ハ数週前一書差上、聯合高等委員設置の件に関して詳細申上候間御一覧被下候義と存候、我東京市及附近の町村は本月一日正午、突然大地震の為め多数の家屋を倒壊し、多数人畜の死傷を生したるが此怖るべき震災に引続き尚更に怖るべき火災を同時に七箇所に起し、為之我帝都十五区の内八区の戸数約六十万戸は無惨にも灰燼に帰し候当日小生は日本橋の事務所に出勤執務中此震害に遭ひ、轟然たる大音響と共に同事務所は崩壊し、小生は僅に身を以て免かれ些の負傷も無く無事飛鳥山住宅へ帰着致候、小生家族及住宅共幸ニ別条無く候間御

　　Various smaller cities towns and villages were destroyed stop inspite of shocking devastation of my office factories stores banks with some of which I am related I escaped danger almost miraculously receiving no harm whatever stop though old I am busily engaged in rescue work combating with misery and suffering of afflicted ones through organization of Dai Shinsai Zengo Kai (Association for Great Earthquake Emergency) which we organized loss is so great that it can not be estimated at this moment one conforting feature in this dark hour is unconquerable optimism of my people to strive for restoration stop we may have to rely upon sympathy and assistance of American nation for reconstruction

余ノ事務所及余ノ関係セル数多ノ銀行会社ハ焼失シタル中ニ於テ、余ハ不思議ニモ微傷ダモ負ハズ、安全ニ余ノ事務所ヨリ逃出ルコトヲ得タリ
