是月以降、関東大震火災ニ対シアメリカ合衆国及ビ其他ノ国ノ栄一ノ関係団体及ビ友人ヨリ、栄一ニ見舞及ビ災害救援ノ申出アリ。栄一其都度其厚意ヲ謝シ、希望ヲ回答ス。

　　Ever since the news of the calamity to Japan, we have been endeavoring to get word as to whether you were safe. One of the newspaper correspondents in his telegram indicated that something may have happened to you, which made us all the more anxious to hear, but this morning there appeared

 in the Post Intelligencer a telegram placing your name among "additional Americans who were safe," and I enclose the clipping of said paper. We are very glad to class you among our own nationality, although your own people may object.
　　Our Red Cross and Chamber of Commerce are carrying on a campaign for funds and supplies for the Japanese people, and on Wednesday following the earthquake, we had already placed on a ship which was out on the ocean for Japan, about $30,000.00 worth of supplies, and our campaign is still on.
　　We are also, at the request of the National Red Cross, purchasing and shipping a large amount of supplies for them.
　　I hope we may find that all of our friends are safe and that you will rely upon this country for every possible assistance in the rehabilitation of your cities.
　　Please give my best regards to Baron Kanda and all our other friends.

大震災勃発の報道を接手せる以来、小生は閣下の御安否につき大いに憂慮罷在候、一新聞紙の電報は閣下の御安否不明なる旨を伝へ候に付私共の憂慮は更に甚しきもの有之候、然る処今朝のポースト、インテリゼンサー紙の電報中「無事米国人名追加」の欄に尊名を見出すことを得安堵仕候、米国人名中に尊名あるは我々の喜とする処に候も、貴国民は或は異議可有之かと存候
米国赤十字社及商業会議所に於ては日本救済の金品を募集中に有之、地震後の翌週の水曜日には、已に救済品価額三万弗のものを積載し貴国に向けて出帆せしめ候
義捐金は今日尚募集中に候が、右の外米国赤十字社の請求に従ひ多量の物資を購求し、積送中に有之候
私は友人諸氏が悉く無事ならん事を祈り居候、尚ほ貴市の復興に関しては我国は及ふ限り御援助するを惜まざるものに有之、御安意可被下候、神田男爵其他の友人諸氏にも宜敷御鳳声被下度候　敬具

My dear Viscount Shibusawa :
　　On my return from the country today, I have received cablegram through the New York Consul General from you, which very much relieves our anxiety about how you and your varied interests came through the terrible calamity in Tokyo and Yokohama.
　　I had previously heard through the Consul that you were safe and immediately wrote you, as you have no doubt received the letter by this time.
　　Mrs. Lowman and I have had considerable experience personally with occurances of this kind, as in '89 we went through the Seattle fire which practically destroyed this city and in 1906 were in the Palace Hotel in San Francisco at the time of their great disaster and while I have seen both cities re-build and now seem to be larger and better cities because of the calamity, at the same time very many individuals were permanently ruined, and to these, both your people and the balance of the world must give sympathetic assistance.
　　I feel very sure that our country will do whatever is desired in loaning money to the Japanese people for this purpose, and in your necessity of having to go abroad to buy large volumes of supplies and material, please remember that you can rely on any of us here to assist you in any way possible you desire.

本日地方より帰来致し紐育の貴国総領事を通じて貴電正に入手仕候、今回東京及横浜地方に起れる可恐大災害に際し、閣下及御関係の事業

の状況を承知し大いに安堵仕候
先之小生は閣下の御無事なりし事を領事より承知致し、早速一書差上置候間定而御覧相成候事と存候
小生及荊妻は今回の如き災害に対する経験を有居候、一八八九年には沙市を焦土と化せしめたる大火災に遭遇し、又一九〇六年には桑港のパレス・ホテルに在りて彼の大震災に遭遇致候、而も小生は此両市が再興せられ、震災の為に却て前にも優る立派にして且つ更に大なる都市と相成候様覚え候、尚夫と同時に多くの人々は永久的に廃残の境涯に置かるゝ事と相成候を目撃致候、此種の人々に対しては貴国民も他の世界各国の人々も十分同情ある援助を与へざるべからずと存候、此目的の為に我国は日本国民に対して、若し必要ある時は喜んで資金の御用立に応すべく、又多くの必要品及諸材料の購入を海外に求めらるゝ場合には、小生等は喜んで御援助申上ぐべき所存に付御承知置被下度候

拝啓、九月十五日及二十六日付貴書正に落手難有拝誦仕候、然ば過般之大震災に付き貴国の新聞紙上に掲載せられたる電報は、老生の安否不明なる旨を伝へ候も、九月十五日の朝刊新聞ポスト・インテリゼンサー紙は「無事米国人名追加」欄を設け、該欄中に老生の姓名を掲載せし為め御安心被下、其後紐育駐在日本総領事経由の老生の電報御入手、一層深く老生の無事を御喜び被下候由の来示敬承御厚意奉深謝候今回の大災厄に関する貴国官民の深厚なる国際的同情と、敏活なる実際的救助に付ては、吾国民は深く感銘致し衷心より深謝罷在候次第にて、多年日米親善増進に腐心せる老生は、一切の苦痛を忘れて微妙なる天の配剤に感激致居候
過般電報並に書面を以て申上候後、組織的活動を必要と存し候為め、徳川公爵を始め民間有力者と謀り大震災善後会を組織して、応急救助及東京市経済復興に付努力罷在候に付御安心被下度候

My dear Sir :
　　It is with my great pleasure to acknowledge the receipt of your favour dated Feb. 5th, which has duly reached me, I am very much pleased and feel thankful to know from your letter that you have been striving to gather some funds for relieving those people who had been distressed by the terrible earthquake in this country. I am, however, very sorry to hear that the great trade depression is now prevailing in your country, especially in the cities of the Eastern States, and also to be told that your city is going to do a rescue work for the unemployed at a great expense. I must deem it a wonderful kindness on your side that you and your friends have tried to get some voluntary contributions in your city, notwithstanding it is very hard to do so, on account of your industrial conditions of this year; and I think I should be justified to believe that you have done it, because you love Japan and aim to promote the better friendly feelings between your people and ours.
　　I am glad I can assure you that I am also doing all that I can for the same aim.
