My dear Sir :
　　You wrote me on June 5th last in relation to political conditions as affecting your country and mine. I was intending to reply at length when you were unexpectedly overtaken by the great calamity which has laid waste your cities, and has been the death of such an appalling number of poeple. It is hard to understand it.

　　I remember distinctly where you live and where you probably have been living ever since, but I cannot make out whether you are in the stricken district. I am sincerely hoping that you and your family, and your property escaped. Even at that, you are confronted with serious duties, much anxiety and much labor.
　　I sympathize with you and the others and am hoping that those whom I knew and in whom I have taken especial interest, have been saved.
　　In the midst of your labors I will not expect a reply but will continue to hope that you and the people of your country will not lose courage but that you will proceed to reconstruct and to replace.

日米問題に関する六月五日附の貴翰正ニ落手仕候、小生は御返事差上度と存居候折柄、計らずも貴市に大震災起り、市街は荒廃に帰し多数の死者をも出せる大惨事の報に接し、唯々驚入るの外無之候
閣下の御住居は何処にして、震災後何処に御住居被遊やに就て略推察に難からず候へども、御住宅が被害域内に属するや否やを了知致兼ね小生は唯閣下を始め家族御一同及財産の上に災害の及ばざりしことを念願致居るのみに候、さるにても閣下は重大の任務、種々の心配及労力を目前に控えられ候事と存候
小生は閣下並ニ其他の人々に御同情申上くると共に、小生の知人及友人諸氏の無事ならん事を祈居候
御取込中の際なれば御回答は御控え被下度、此際貴国民は決して落胆することなく、復興の為ニ勇往邁進せられん事を祈念仕候　敬具
