Your Excellency :
　　Permit me to extend to you my heartfelt sympathy. The terrible blow which has stricken Japan has depressed us exceedingly. We who have so recently been the recipients of Japanese hospitality and who have come in such close contact with the men of affairs of your nation can best appreciate the depth of your sorrow and woe.
　　For your own personal information I want to say that every individual with whom I have come in contact shares with me a profound feeling of regret. The silk industry of America has responded nobly to our appeal for funds for the Japanese sufferers and to date in that one branch of business alone we have raised the sum of $410,000., a true manifestation of the friendly relations which exist between the two countries.
　　I hope that this letter will reach you in excellent health and that you will be given strength to surmount the many difficulties which the future holds forth. If there is anything that the silk industry of America can do to sassist, pray command us.

今回の大震災に対し満腔の同情を奉表候、日本に大災害の起れる由報道に接したる時、小生は驚愕措く能はざるもの有之候、最近私共は日本を訪れ様々歓待を忝ふし、爾来貴国の実業家諸氏より親密なる交誼を享け居りしにより、貴国の災害に対しては殊の外御同情に不堪もの有之候
小生の知人等は小生と共に貴国の災害を深く悲み居り、米国絹業団にては日本災害救済資金募集に対して喜んで応募致し、一ケ処のみにて今日まで已に金四拾壱万弗を募集致候が、此は日米両国の間に親善関係の存するを表示せるものと存候
閣下には益々御壮健にて、前途に横たわる多くの難関を突破するに充分なる健康を享受されん事を祈り居候、若し米国絹業団にて御援助申上げ可得ことも候はば御下命被下度候
