是月以降、関東大震火災ニ対シアメリカ合衆国及ビ其他ノ国ノ栄一ノ関係団体及ビ友人ヨリ、栄一ニ見舞及ビ災害救援ノ申出アリ。栄一其都度其厚意ヲ謝シ、希望ヲ回答ス。

My dear Viscount :
　　My family and I were in London when we received news of the terrible earthquake and fire which visited the city of Tokyo. I repaired immediately to the Japanese Embassy in that city to ask if there was any news of my friends, but matters were in such confusion at that time that no word had been received. I took occasion ten days later to again inquire, but no word had yet been received, so Mrs. Alexander and I were in a state of suspense until we arrived in New York on the twenty-sixth of September. There I learned from the Japanese Consul of your safety and that of a number of my friends in Japan.
　　Please accept for yourself and your family Mrs. Alexander's and my sincerest sympathy for the dreadful event which has befallen Japan. I think we realize, perhaps more clearly than others, the frightful consequences of an earthquake and fire, for we went through a similar experience in 1906, when San Francisco was visited by a severe earthquake. From what I can learn in the papers, however, the earthquake in Japan was much more dreadful.
　　I had intended writing you before and offering our condolences, but shortly after my arrival in San Francisco I was taken sick and am still confined to my house in Piedmont.
　　I was glad to receive word from Mr. Lynch that California, and San Francisco especially, had arisen to the occasion and that over five hundred thousand dollars in funds had been subscribed for the relief of the sufferers in Japan. I trust that the United States as a whole will give ample evidence of their interest and friendship in your country by assisting in every way possible.
　　Mr. Loyall A. Osborne, who was a member of my commission to Japan in the spring of 1920, has just passed through this city en route to Tokyo. Unfortunately I was sick in bed and did not have an opportunity to talk with him. I understand that he is head of a commission to help in the restoration work. I only wish that I could have accompanied him.
　　Please feel assured, dear Viscount, that our hearts are with you and your countrymen in your affliction, and that if

拝啓
小生は家族と共に倫敦に滞在中、東京市の可恐大震火災の報道を聞き直ちに同地の日本大使館に赴き、友人諸氏の安否を知らんとしたるも当時は非常の混雑にて目的を達すること能はざりし次第に付、更に十日後再び同大使館を訪れたるも、依然として不明なりし為め不得止私共は帰米の途につき、九月廿六日紐育に到着の上貴国領事より、閣下を始め多数の友人諸氏の御無事の報を聞くことを得、安堵仕候
今回の大災害に対し私共夫妻は閣下及御家族に深厚の同情を表し候、私共は一九〇六年の桑港の震災に際し類似の経験を有し居り候間、今回貴国に起りし震火災の驚愕すべき惨状に就ては何人よりも良く諒解致し得る様考へられ候、乍併新聞紙の伝ふる処によれば、今回日本に起れる震災の惨害は桑港の遠く及ばざるもの有之様存候、小生は今少し早く御見舞状差上べき処、桑港に到着後病気に罹り、今日猶ほピードモントの拙宅に引籠中にて延引に及び候、何卒御容赦被下度候
時局に際し加州、特に桑港は義捐金五十万弗以上を募集し、日本の罹災者救護費として送附したる由リンチ氏より承知し欣喜罷在候、米全国は凡有方法により貴国を援助する為、深厚の友情を表示することと存候、一九二〇年春貴国を訪問せる一行の一人なるローヤル・エー・オスボーン氏が東京への途次当地を通過せられたるも、小生は病気中の為め会見の機を不得ず、氏は貴地復興事業に参与すべき一団体を率いられ居る由にして、小生が同氏と同道し得ざるを深く遺憾とするものに候、私共は今回の大震災に際し閣下を始め貴国人に深厚の同情を表するものに有之候、若し私共にて為し得べきことも候はゞ御遠慮なく御申出被下度候　敬具

拝復、十月十六日付の御芳書正に落手難有拝見仕候
然は今回の大震災に関し、欧洲旅行より御帰着匆々懇篤なる御慰問に接し御芳情真に難有奉謝候、未曾有の大天災に際し老生・家族・親戚一同、何れも無事なるを得たるは天佑と存じ候、何卒御省念被下度候老生は大震災勃発後間もなく、民間諸有志と協力して大震災善後会を組織し、罹災者の救恤及帝都の経済的復興等に関し日夜奔走致居候
今次の事変に際し貴国官民の深厚なる御同情と、莫大なる金品の御寄送とによりて表明せられたる国民的友情を、吾々日本国民は深く肝銘し、之れに対する感謝の詞を述ぶると共に、年来日米親善の為に微力を尽せる老生は一切の苦痛を忘れて歓喜致候次第に御座候
去る十一月廿一日オスボーン氏を協調会館に招待して、労働問題に関し意見を交換致候が、其際貴台の御消息を伺ひ一九二〇年の光景を追懐して快感を催し候、擱筆に臨み老生夫妻より貴台御両所に対し敬意を表し、猶深厚なる御同情に対し難有御礼申上候　敬具
