是月以降、関東大震火災ニ対シアメリカ合衆国及ビ其他ノ国ノ栄一ノ関係団体及ビ友人ヨリ、栄一ニ見舞及ビ災害救援ノ申出アリ。栄一其都度其厚意ヲ謝シ、希望ヲ回答ス。

My dear Viscount Shibusawa :
　　I was on the point of writing you when I came back from my vacation.
　　The news of the terrible catastrophe which came upon Tokyo moved me greatly. I could see all of that great city in my memory and it seemed incredible that anything so terrible could happen in human history.
　　I at once thought of my old friends in Tokyo and was rejoiced to infer from a published telegram from Mr. Wanamaker that you were safe. I am indeed thankful that this is so.
　　The regard in which Japan is held in America must be evident to you from the immediate response to the appeal of our President. I wish I could have had, myself, an enormous fortune so that I could have put large sums at your disposal. I believe that you are discovering the true heart of America in this response. I have nowhere heard anything but words of deepest sympathy for you and your people in this hour of suffering.

　　And the loss has reached into America as well. Only yesterday I was at a college and the Dean and his wife of that very Institution had been killed in the Grand Hotel at Yokohama. Many of my former students have suffered, and the homes of several of my friends have been destroyed.
　　In such moments as this it is a great relief to feel that in the universe there is a Good Will, and that whether or not we can understand the purpose of an immediate occasion, back of it all lies a Way which is truth and goodness.

拝啓
休暇を終り帰来次第小生は手紙差上度と存居りしものに候、東京に起りし大災害の報道に接し、小生は驚愕措く能はず候
彼の大都市を想起する毎に如此恐るべき災害が、人類の歴史上に起るべしとは考へ得べからざることに候
小生は直ちに東京の友人の安否に想到し憂慮致居候処、ワナメーカ氏の発表せる電報により、閣下の御無事の由を知り大いに安堵すると共に、天佑を深く感謝致居候
米国が日本に対して有する好意は、大統領の諭告に対して米国民が直ちに応答せることによりて明に御承知可相成と存候、若し小生が莫大の富を有しなば喜んで之れを投したるべしと存候、右により米国人の真情を御承知可相成と存候、時局に際し閣下を始め貴国民に対する深厚の同情は随所に之を耳に致候
被害は単に《＊》日本にのみ止まらずして、昨日或る大学に於て聞きたる処によれば、同大学々長及夫人は、当時横浜のグランド・ホテルに在りて圧死の厄に遭ひし由に有之候、右の外シカゴ大学の出身者にして罹災せるもの多数有之候
如此時局《＊＊》に際し私共は宇宙に神在し賜ひ、仮令ひ表面に表はれたるのみにては其目的の奈辺に在るかは知るよしも無之候へども、此宇宙の背後には真と善との存するを思ひ、大いに慰め居候　敬具
