是月以降、関東大震火災ニ対シアメリカ合衆国及ビ其他ノ国ノ栄一ノ関係団体及ビ友人ヨリ、栄一ニ見舞及ビ災害救援ノ申出アリ。栄一其都度其厚意ヲ謝シ、希望ヲ回答ス。

His Excellency Viscount Eiichi Shibusawa,
　　Tokyo, Japan.
My dear Viscount Shibusawa :
　　The hearts of all men have been deeply moved with sympathy in the overwhelming catastrophe which befell the Japanese people on September 1st and the days immediately succeeding. Especially, old―time friends of your nation have suffered with your people in this season of great loss and widespread sorrow. We have followed with deepest interest the expressions of the fellow-feeling of our countrymen and have noted with profound satisfaction the evidences of changing sentiment among many whose sympathies hitherto have inclined toward those fellow countrymen of ours whose attitude has been one of distrust and dislike of Japan.

拝啓、九月一日以来数日に亘り日本国民の遭遇せる未曾有の大災厄は吾等の同情措く能はざる処に御座候、特に長年日本の友を以て自任せる吾々は、貴国民の為に悲むる所痛切に有之候、米国民の同情を考察するに、従来排日態度の人々に同感を抱きし一般米国民が、今や親日の態度に傾けるを見て、小生は満足に堪えざる次第に御座候
