            TOKYO
                   May 19, 1928
H. E. Baron E. Shibusawa,
  Takinogawa,
  Tokyo-fu.
Dear Baron Shibusawa:
A group of Americans have organized a small club with a

limited membership of two hundred which is to be called The American Club. Three floors of a building opposite the Imperial Hotel have been rented and have been furnished. An organization committee is temporarily in charge and practically all the American residents of Tokyo have sent in their application for membership. Those from Yokohama and Kobe can become non-resident members. This club will serve the same purposes more or less for Americans here as the Nippon Club in New York does for the Japanese residents there. Membership, however, will not be confined to Americans but will be open to other nationals as well.
Knowing your interest in America and your many friendships among Americans, I am taking the liberty of asking whether you could care to join the club. I do this at the suggestion of the organization committee. We will all be honored to include you among the original two hundred members. The membership list will be practically completed at the informal opening which will take place on May 23rd. The initiation fee is \50 and the dues \10 per month. The dining rooms will be in charge of an excellent chef (Swiss), who has already been engaged, and the charges are going to be moderate.
The idea of the club is a good one, I believe. It will afford a sociable and convenient meeting place for Americans resident in Tokyo and for those who are visiting here. If you consent to join the club the hope is that you will use it.
Our initial fund was a small one and consequently the club starts in a modest way. If it is successful, as we all hope and expect it will be, then it will develop accordingly. It is a club and not a philanthropic endeavor. There is no urge to join it and you must act freely according to your desires, but I am sure it would be highly appreciated if your name could be included in the limited membership which it is proposed to establish.
I am enclosing herewith an application blank which you can fill in if it meets with your approval.
With kindest wishes always, believe me,
            Yours very sincerely,
             (Signed) B. W. Fleisher

ciated by that committee and by all of the members of the club. We feel honored to have you as a member of the American Club. Your interest in and your devotion to all things which tend to develop closer and better relations between the United States and Japan, form a record of which we Americans are proud. While we realize you may not use the club as much as the younger members, yet it seemed to us fitting and appropriate to have you identified with anything which concerns the welfare of the American community in Japan. We thank you for your kind interest.
With warmest personal regards, believe me,
              Very sincerely yours,
