My dear Mr. Obata:
　　It is with the greatest pleasure that I remember my visit with you a year ago now, and the courtesies which I enjoyed at the hands of Viscount Shibusawa.
　　Owing to the fact that I have been absent in Europe, having only just returned, I neglected to advise you of the fact that I had given some money to the American School in Japan, and asked them to use it as prizes to their students who wrote the best history of Viscount Shibusawa and the efforts that he has made to promote peace and amity with the world at large, and especially with America.
　　I think perhaps the Viscount would be interested in these

 essays, and I shall have copies made and send them to you.
　　Meanwhile, I have noticed in one of the recent American publications, a picture of the Viscount, and that leads me to make this request. I should be greatly indebted to you, and to the Viscount, if he would inscribe his autograph upon a photograph of himself and send it to me.
　　I have already given his books a prominent place in my library, and I should treasure his photograph highly. If it is not asking too much of him, and of you, may I request that a copy of his photograph be given me, with his autograph ? Please present my regards to him, and reserve also, a liberal share for yourself.

拝啓、益御清適奉賀候、然ば一年以前渋沢子爵を御訪問申上げ候際、子爵の御鄭重なる御款待を忝うしたるを追憶致し欣快措く能はざる次第に候、其後欧洲旅行を企て只今漸く帰米致候に付ては、御通信の機を逸し失礼仕候、実は小生儀日本のアメメリカン・スクールに若干金を寄附して渋沢子爵及び子爵が世界一般特に日米間の平和親善増進のため貢献せられたる努力に関する最良の伝記を作製せる同校学生に、賞金として授与する様委託仕候
此等の論説に対して子爵は興味を感ぜらるゝ事と存候、小生は複本を調製せしめ貴下の御手許迄御送附可申上候
尚ほ又最近発行の亜米利加刊行物中に子爵の御尊影を拝見仕候に付ては、失礼ながら子爵の御写真に御自署の上御恵与被下候はゞ誠に難有仕合に御座候
子爵より拝受せる書籍は小生の図書室の目抜きの場所に陳列致居候故子爵の御尊影は大切に珍蔵可仕候、甚だ僭越の至りとは存候得共子爵御自署の御写真壱葉御恵与に与り度奉懇願候、何卒子爵へ宜しく御上聞被下度願上候

My dear Mr. Obata:
　　Reply to yours of August 6th has been delayed, as you know, by my absence from my office both in Europe and distant parts of Amercia, so it is only at the moment that I am in a position to answer your very delightful letter of the 6th.
　　Please say to Viscount Shibusawa that I am greatly indebted to him for his kindness in sending me his autographed photograph. I have had it framed, and it will always occupy an honored place in my home.
　　Under separate cover I am sending you a copy of the essays which the students in the American School in Japan, namely,-

　　　　Elizabeth Garman -
wrote, in response to the prizes which I offered.
　　I send them exactly as they are, without any corrections whatsoever, so that you may see them the same as in the original.
　　I am placing a copy of these also in the files of the library of the University of Rochester, where they will always remain as a permanent testimonial to his memory.
　　Will you please give Viscount Shibusawa my kindest and most affectionate greetings, and say to him that we hope that the day may yet come, when those principles for which he has so long and righteously striven may be the joint creed of our countries.

Dear Mr. Miner,
　　Your esteemed letter of Oct. 17, 1929, together with the copies of two prize essays, reached me on Nov. 13, 1929. A prompt acknowledgement should have been made for the failure of which I beg your generous pardon.
　　The entire translation has lately been completed, but the Viscount has been indisposed ever since the 10th of January. He welcomed the new year with good cheer, but a few days later he contracted cold which somewhat upset his otherwise good health. The best medical advice is available for him, of course, and the diagnosis of his case shows no alarming symptom. However, the Viscount is complaining of his languidness and lack of buoyancy of spirit.
　　The Secretaries have not been able to present to him any business matter, including correspondences. He is now 90 years old and that great age may count for his present feebleness, but we are hoping that the milder weather will invigorate him.
　　So it will be sometime for you to hear from the Viscount directly. Meanwhile, I am just sending you a few lines, giv

拝啓、益御清適奉賀候、然ば一千九百二十九年十月十七日の御芳書及び懸賞論文二通の写同十一月十三日正に落手仕候、右早速御一報申上べきの処延引の段平に御海容を奉祈候
右懸賞文全部の翻訳も最近完了致候得共、渋沢子爵には去一月十日頃より風邪に冒され今尚ほ引籠中に御座候、子爵は誠に御機嫌よく新年を迎へられしも、数日後風邪に罹られ稍健康を損ぜられたる次第にて専ら療養中に有之候、医師の診断に依れば何等憂ふべき徴候無之由に候得共、兎角倦怠と元気の欠乏とを訴居候
秘書も事務上の書類通信文等の呈出を差控へ居る次第に御座候、子爵は本年九十歳に達せしを以て自然虚弱を覚へらるゝならんと愚考罷在候、併し追々温暖の候とも相成候へば元気を恢復せらるゝ事と存候、就ては子爵より直接御通信申上ぐる迄には多少の時日を要することゝ存候間、御回答旁小生より子爵の近状御報道申上候次第に御座候

Dear Mr. Miner:
　　It was some months ago that the copies of two prize essays written by Mr. Phillips Garman and Miss Elizabeth Garman of the Tokyo American School reached this office. They were at once translated into the vernacular for the convenience of Viscount Shibusawa as he is not able to understand English. The Viscount read through both of them, and pointed out a few errors of facts which are to be corrected. No error was found in the paper written by Miss Garman, but a few minor errors were noticed in that of Mr. Garman.
　　Enclosed please find a slip of paper on which corrections

　　Needless to tell you that the Viscount deeply appreciated your patronage in this matter, and that he ordered me to express on his behalf his heartfelt thanks to your good self.
　　The Viscount is complaining of the weight of the old age which is quite heavily resting on him, depriving him of his buoyancy and vivacity. He spent the summer in Hakone where he enjoyed the cool and restful air. Although he is getting old, yet he is cheerful and optimistic, scattering around him that elevating and inspiring atmosphere.
　　It is possible that in one of these days he may write to you as he owes you a reply or two. In the meantime, I am sending this note to you, transmitting warm greetings of the Viscount.

子爵は老齢の為め幾分溌溂たる活気を失はれ候、今夏は箱根に避暑、清涼にして新鮮なる空気中に数週を費され候、子爵は高齢に達せらるるも快活楽天的にして周囲に断へず霊妙なる感化を及ぼし居られ候
