      CORDIALLY INVITES YOU
         TO BECOME
       A Founder Life Member
           OF
       The Pacific Geographic
           Society
        ――――――――
THIS INVITATION IS SENT YOU AS A COURTESY AT THE REQUEST OF A PRESENT FOUNDER MEMBER AND THE SOCIETY DESIRES NOTHING OTHER THAN THAT YOUR OWN JUDGEMENT AND CONVICTIONS SHALL
       GUIDE YOUR DECISION.
FOUNDER MEMBERSHIPS ARE BY INVITATION ONLY AND ARE LIMITED IN NUMBER. THE SOCIETY THEREFORE WILL APPRECIATE THE FAVOR OF AN
      EARLY DECISION BY YOU.

           The Society
The Pacific Geographic Society was organized in 1929 by a group of prominent educators, scientists, explorers and travelers.
Contemplating the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean, greatest of all waters; sensing the fascination of its shores and its peoples, yet realizing the general ignorance surrounding their territorial and human phases and problems; recognizing that upon and around these waters will be staged the drama of the very destiny of the human race ; this group of men and women determined that the peoples of the Pacific Littoral should have the opportunity to better know and understand each other and the lands in which they live.
The practical result of this determination is The Pacific Geographic Society, incorporated and operated on a non-profit basis―its officers and regents serving without salaries or financial compensation―its funds distributed only for the furtherance of The Society's aims; in short, The Society operates wholly for and through its Founder Membership to promote educational and scientific achievements for the greatest interest and benefits to mankind.
           The Objective
THE IDEA―to gather and disseminate knowledge concerning the countries and peoples of the Pacific Littoral through exploration and research by organized expeditions―international contacts and conventions for better understanding―local meetings of member groups for popular study of geography
 - 第40巻 p.538 -ページ画像
and the allied sciences―cooperation with schools and colleges to humanize and invigorate the presentation of geographic and allied courses―formation of lecture and news bureaus―compilation of authoritative books, reports and literature relevant to Pacific lands and peoples―publication of a magazine of highest educational interest and authority―briefly, all activities which serve to increase the world's knowledge of and interest in this great territory.
THE IDEAL―to conduct these activities along popular but strictly educational and scientific lines without commercial, political, social or religious favor or bias―an unselfish, nonpromotive program to react in lasting influence for universal understanding, friendship and peace.
         Founder Members
Founder members of The Society are limited in number and are admitted by invitation only. They are classified in three groups, with different life-fees dependent upon the desires of the individual, but without distinction as to membership privileges :
  Founder Life Membership ...................$ 10.00
Founder Patron Life Membership ...........$ 100.00
  Founder Benefactor Life Membership ..... $ 1000.00
Each member is presented with a parchment certificate indicative of his group and suitable for framing―its possession is a mark of distinction as a patron of science, eduation and the arts and an advocate of international peace and good will.
Founder Memberships in The Society are free from present or future dues, assessments or liability of any kind.

the honor conferred upon him, but is apprehensive of the fact that he may not be of any service to the Society as he is getting very old and does not understand your language.
The Viscount charges me to be sure to send his grateful greetings to Mrs. C.C. Pierce who with her lamented husband was here in Japan some years ago as messengers of peace and good will.
          Yours most cordially,
                   K. Obata.
                 Secretary to
