是ヨリ先、小畑久五郎訳「アンドルー・カーネギー自叙伝」出版サル。栄一是ニ序文ヲ付シタリ。是日栄一、フランク・エー・ヴァンダーリップニ右序文ノ英訳ヲ添ヘ該書五十部ヲ送ル旨ノ書翰ヲ発ス。

My dear Mr. Vanderlip,
　　The translation of the autobiography of the late Mr. Carnegie is at last completed and is now ready for distribution. It was my hope that the translation copies might reach you and Mrs. Carnegie while I was in America, but owing to the delay of preparation of my preface to it on account of the journey, the publication was delayed until today.
　　I send you a box of 50 copies which will be carried by the steamer "Shunko Maru" of Osaka Shosen Kaisha, which will leave Kobe on the 15th inst. Please accept them as my compliments. I sent the same number of copies to Mrs. Carnegie.
　　I presume that the translation is an enigma to you, but I am sure that you can make good use of the copies. I enclose the English translation of my preface to the translation. I shall be delighted if you read it as it expresses my conception of the author.
　　Thanking you for all the trouble you took for helping me to bring about this result for the good of humanity, I beg to remain

　　I have delayed writing in response to your letter of July 12 which arrived in my absence in Europe until the books you were sending had come through and I might tell you I had received them. I now have the books and shall be delighted to distribute them wherever they will be appreciated. You are to be congratulated on the fine appearance of this edition. I have read the translation of your preface with interest and consider it a splendid tribute to a very prominent American.
