Dear Viscount Shibusawa:
　　It is with profoundest gratitude that I have heard from my wife of Your Excellency's renewed and wounderful kindness to me and the school for which I am working. I have no words to express my gratitude and joy. Not only is Your Excellency's kindness a help financially, but far more is it an encouragement and inspiration to me spiritually in the work I am endeavoring to do. Also your Excellency's kind inquiries about me personally I appreciate very greatly. It will be my pleasure to strive ever more earnestly to make some contribution, though small, to Japan's true welfare.

　　My regret about American's anti-Japanese Exclusion Act is a daily regret, and since the day that President Coolidge signed the bill I have not failed a single day to pray for the repeal of the act. As I have occasion I also write letters and articles. May the day come soon when the unkind law will be done away with.
　　I also want to express my heartfelt thanks for Your Excellency's kindness and courtesy to my wife. She was greatly encouraged in her arduous work.

拝啓、荊妻の談によれば小生及び小生の学校に対し、閣下より新に多大の御厚情を賜はり候由にて奉深謝候、小生は感謝と喜とを披瀝すべき言葉を知らず候、閣下よりの財政的御援助は言ふも更らなり、之れよりも更らに難有は、小生の事業に対する精神的鞭韃の御言葉に御座候、小生一個の健康につきても御親切なる御尋ねに預り難有奉謝候、乍微力小生は日本の真の幸福の為めに従来よりも更らに熱心に尽力可仕候

　　Mrs. Schneder has returned to Sendai and has told me of her visit to you, and your kindness to her. I thank you very much. I regret that I have not been able to call on you recently.
　　I have just written to Vicount Shibusawa and have inclosed a receipt for his gift of One Thousand Yen. It almost hurts me to have received this gift from him at this time when he is carrying such heavy burdens for the Y.M.C.A. and other causes, and when the deep longings of his heart in reference to Japanese-American relations are unsatisfied. All that can comfort and reconcile me is my purpose to use to the utmost his gift for the education of young men. I thought it best to send the receipt to his office rather than his home.

　　Often when I pass the statue of the late Viscount Shibusawa opposite the Bank of Japan I take off my hat in respect for his

 memory.
　　My first meeting with Viscount Shibusawa was not long after his return from America and his meeting with John Wanamaker in Philadelphia. In the reception room of his business office he displayed the American flag and the Bible which Wanamaker presented to him. It was in evidence of his admiration for America and of America's humanest business magnate. My purpose in calling on him then was to solicit aid for my school, Tohoku Gakuin, in Sendai. I had an introduction to him from my predecessor in office. Very courteously but firmly he told me that he could not consider my request unless I had fuller recommendation―from the prefectural governor located in Sendai, or somebody of that standing.
　　That recommendation was secured, and then he responded, not only once, but later again and again, and he got other leading men of Tokyo to give. He became by far the greatest benefactor in Japan of the Christian school of which I was the head. Many thousands of yen were contributed by him and his business friends to meet dire needs.

シユネーダー博士　〔仙台電話〕東北学院名誉院長デー・ビー・シユネーダー博士は、狭心症で仙台市東三番丁の自邸で療養中、五日午前十一時逝去した、享年八十三、博士は明治廿年十二月宣教師として来朝、翌年一月同学院の院長となり、以来四十余年間日米親善に力を注いだ人、勲三等旭日章を授与されてゐる
　　　○シュネーダーハ、昭和十三年七月四日東京中央放送局ヨリ「滞日五十年間の思ひ出」ト題スル日本語放送ヲナシ、ソノ中ニテ栄一ノ東北学院ニ対スル後援ト日米関係ニ対スル努力トヲ述ベタリ。
