　　　　　　　　（昭和五年五月廿一日午前十時半於曖依村荘）
　　約により米国人ジヨン・ウツド（Dr. John W. Wood）氏は、築地の聖路加病院長トイスラ博士に伴はれて定刻丁度に見えられ、応接間で青淵先生と対談せられた。
先生「ウツドさんには何時こちらへお出になりましたか。」
ウツド氏「此三月末に日本へ参りましたが、間もなく支那へ渡りましたので、つい二・三日前に再び日本へ着いた許りで御座います。支那から直ぐに米国に帰るつもりでをりました所、旅程を変更し帰りがけに日本へ立寄りました為、本日再び子爵に拝顔する機会と特権とを得ました事を、厚く御礼申げます。」
先生「だんだん老衰して甚だ弱ります。此二月十三日が満九十才の誕生日で御座いました。斯く長生をする積でもなかったが、何時の間にか此様な老人になって終ひました。其為め日本の友人も少々上とか少し下とか云ふやうな私と同年輩の人々は、殆んど皆死んで終ひました。いやずつと若い人々もだんだん死にました。亜米利加は文明国で養生がよいから長生きしさうなものですが、ハーバート大学のエリオット（Eliot）さんや、ワナメーカ（John Wanamaker）さん、ライマン・ゲーヂ（Lyman Gage）さんも一つ上でしたが、皆数年前に亡くなれ、ジヨン・ハインツ（John Heinz)さんもスチルマン（Stilman）さんも逝きました。さういふなくなられた友人を算へると十数人に上ります。文明国の方は今少し長寿を保たれさうなものですが、左様でなく、文明国としては遅れて居る国に人となつた私が斯う長命してをります。此例から見ますと文明国の人々必ずしも長寿を保つとはいへませんね。」
ウ氏「御話の通り子爵の古いお友達は続いて逝去せられましたが、米国には子爵を友達として誇る所の若い友人が沢山をりますから…………」

先生「トイスラさん、私は壮年の時には外国が嫌ひだつたのです。私の先生がね、外国排斥論者であつたのです。英国が支那にオピアムを送つて来て、遂にその為に戦争を惹起して香港を取つた――其次第を書いた「清英近世談」といふ本が出来まして、私も之を読みました。日本もかういふ心配はありはせんか、――支那の次には日本を攻めるであらうと始終その心配をしてゐたのであります。斯る関係から外国を忌み嫌ひ外国を学ぶといふ事はしなかつたのです。これは百姓で国にゐた時の事ですよ。所が丁度私が二十八の時に仏蘭西へ行く事になりました。これは自分で行つたんではなくて、当時の将軍であり主君であつた徳川慶喜公に命ぜられて行つたのです。その船中で、同僚からタウンゼンド・ハリスの事を詳しく聞きました。聞いて見るとハリスは実に武士道的精神によつて行動してをることが明かになりました。又亜米利加といふ国は立派な国であるといふ事を覚りました。中でもハリスの通訳官ヒユースケンが殺された時に、他の公使達が幕府信頼するに足らずと称して、江戸を撤退したにも関らず、タウンゼンド・ハリスは其不可なる旨を主張し、敢て動きませんでした、斯の如きは一国の政府を侮辱するものであるといふのが、ハリスの反対の理由でありました。他の公使達が若し壮士が来てお前を襲ふやうな事があつたら、如何するかと聞くと已むを得ぬ、道に外れぬ為に殺されるなら、甘んじて死につくと揚言したと云ふことであります。此事を聞いて深く感じまして、あゝ米国人は立派なものである、日本の武士道と少しも違はぬ行動であると、深く亜米利加の正義に感服したのです。英吉利は他の国を奪る国である、亜米利加は通訳が殺されてもなほ留まる国であるといふ事を知りました。」
トイスラ氏（日本語で）「此間子爵は築地聖路加病院へいらつしやいました。其時ウツドさんもゐました。ウツドさんイムプレスされました。其時ウツドさんお目に掛つて喜びました。」
ウ氏「此機会に於て子爵が聖路加病院の評議員としてトイスラ博士を援助せられ、創設以来今日まで熱心に御力添下さつた事に対して、衷心から御礼を申上げたいと思ひます。もし子爵の御援助無かりせば、聖路加病院は今日の隆盛を見る事が出来なかつたかも知れません。只今病院は建築中で、先づ一と安心と云ふ所で御座います。紐育には多くの友人がをりますから、帰つてから申伝へたいと思ひます、子爵が何か病院の将来に対する暗示を御与へ下さらば有難いと存じます。」
先生「トイスラさんは此道に通ぜらるゝのみならず、熱心に病院の為日本の為にお尽し下すつたので、大に成績を挙げられました。此事は人の皆知る所で御座いまして、常に感佩致してをる所で御座います。今度の病院は堂々たるもので、亜米利加的の、強い立派な力ある学問的な病院が出来たといふ事は、トイスラさんの熱心にもよる所ですけれども、また貴方方亜米利加の人々の御援助の賜物と云はねばなりません。只今は私がいくらかトイスラさんのお助けをしたと言はれましたが、私自身の力は至つて少く、又別して物質的方面

では思ふ程お尽し出来ないのを残念に思つて居ります。けれども私は聖路加病院の事を私の仕事と同じ事に思つて、及ぶ限りはお尽し致すつもりでをります。亜米利加の方々が此病院に対して尽して下さる、その御好意を厚く日本の人々は感謝致してをりますから、も少し物質的にもお助けをしたいと思つて居ります――例へば附属図書館を作るとか、或は病院にかうして置いたらなどと思うて居りますが――ともかく一方にはトイスラさん、又一方には貴方のやうな海外のお方が居られてお力をお尽し下さる為に、斯く立派に立行つてゐるのでありまして、お帰りになりましたら、渋沢が心から御礼を申してゐたといふ事を、お伝へ下さるやうにお願ひ申します。」
ウ氏「子爵のお言葉は何よりも難有承りました。帰国の上は一同に謹んで伝へます。」
先生「トイスラさん、これ丈は日本人がしたんだといふものの作れるやうな、何かよい機会を作つて下さいませ……私は直き死にますからね……（微笑）」
ト氏「病院の脇三角の地あります。病院の間狭い路アリマス。東京市の道です。その道東京市寄附してクレました。道の外三角の地所アリマス。それ十一・二万円、三百五十坪あります。それは阪谷男爵心配して下さいます。その地所は病院でもつて使ひ度いです。もう少し後で評議員の方を呼び、この地所を買ひたいです。此間輸入した材料には税金かかりました。然し皆サンの心配で五・六万円で済みました。一ぺん築地を見てごらんなサイ。先年子爵の心配して下すつた金はあのメモーリアルを作らねばなりまセン。その三角の地所の真中に記念物を作り度いと思ひマス。どういふものがヨイカ。ドクタ・佐野利器よくやつてをります。よい天気の時小畑サン、イラして下サイ。一寸半時間丈小畑サン来て下サイ。此間秩父宮サン阪谷サン御出ナスツタ。」
　そこで先生は聖路加病院訪問の約束をせられ、小畑氏に申含められた。ウツド博士とトイスラ博士は別れを述べて、小畑氏の案内で咲き誇つた薔薇を観、その美事な花が全部亜米利加種であると聞いて懇望したので、園丁に命じ三枝ばかり切らせたところ、その花をもつて両氏は帰途に就かれた。

　　This is only a short note, to thank you for attending the luncheon recently in Tsukiji, for the Advisory Council of St.Luke's, and to ask that you express to Viscount Shibusawa my warmest personal regards and good wishes. Your long friendship for the institution, and his devotion and unswerving support of our work, gives me good cause for the most sincere gratitude and appreciation. I look forward with a great deal of pleasure to seeing Viscount Shibusawa again on my return to Tokyo, and hope his health during the past winter months has been good.

Dear Dr. Teusler :
　　Your esteemed letter duly reached me for which I thank you most heartily. It was at once translated and submitted to Viscount Shibusawa, although the missile was deirected to me. He was greatly pleased to hear me read your letter and told me to say to you that he is always admiring you for your untiring efforts to develop the St. Luke's International Hospital here in Tokyo; that though due to the old age he is much confined at home, yet he never forgets the welfare of the hospital; that your mission at this time is very important one into which you must be pouring your energy and wisdom; and that he will be glad to see you safely come back in the early date with a trophy as you have done so many times in the past.

　　Baron Skatani is suffering from a slight cerebral hemorrhage. He has been laid down in bed since the first of this month. His condition is improving and no further complication is anticipated by the physician in charge. He has overworked himself and his tired brain needs a perfect and possibly protracted rest.

　　The last, but not the least, news that I shall give out to you is about the Viscount. He is certainty feeling the weight of his great age, but at the same time he is keeping remarkably well. With the vistit and settling of the mild season, he will be able to be out and enjoy life. He is very anxious to hear a glad tiding from America to the end that the anti-Japanese immigration law of 1924 is done away with, placing Japan on the quota　basis.
　　No better and finer "Omiyage" you can bring back to him from your great country !

My dear Mr. Obata :
　　This is only a short note, as I am returning so soon to Japan, to acknowledge your letter of April eleventh, and to thank you for sending it to me. I was very much distressed to hear of Baron Sakatani's illness, and wrote to him a few days ago, expressing my concern.
　　Please give my most cordial greetings and all good wishes to Viscount Shibusawa. Nothing would give me greater pleasure than to be able to go back to him carrying as an omiyage definite information that the objectionable clause in the Immigration Act of 1924 has been rescinded. Unfortunately, this law, like most Government enactments, is in the hands of politicians and men largely unconsicous of the damages some of their actions have inflicted. I know that there is a growing group of friends and admirers of Japan throughout the United States, who regret the existence of this law, and I also know that steadily efforts are being made by men high in Government circles and in civilian life, to change the Immigration Act which seems to contain an anti-Japanese clause. Sooner or later, I am confident, this will be done.
　　I am seeing Mr. Castle in Washington within a few days and will certainly tell him verbally again about the wishes of Viscount Shibusawa in this connection. I know how much Mr. Castle's heart is on the right side in this matter, and how glad he would be if the clause could be eliminated. He will be glad to hear indirectly about Viscount Shibusawa and I know we can count on his quiet and persistent assistance in rectifying this situation.
　　Looking forward with pleasure to seeing you and Viscount Shibusawa and Baron Sakatani before very long, I am, with cordial good wishes,

渋沢子爵へは貴下より宜しく御鳳声被下度願上候、一千九百二十四年の移民法中の忌まはしき条項を廃止せる、確実の情報を御土産として帰任するを得ば、此上も無き喜びに御座候得共、不幸にして該法は多数の法令と等しく、政党者及自己の行為が他に如何なる損害を及ぼすべきやを殆ど自覚せざる人々の手中に有之候、米国到る処に該法の存在を遺憾とする親日家の数は増加しつゝあり、且つ此排日条項を含むと思惟せらるゝ移民法修正のため、朝野の有力者が着実なる努力を為しつゝあることも亦、小生の知る処に御座候、就ては早晩必ず修正せらるゝことゝ確信仕候、数日中に華府に於てキヤツスル氏と会見仕筈に有之候間、これに関聯せる渋沢子爵の御意見に就き、再び同氏に必ず伝達可致候、該問題に就きてキヤツスル氏は正義に組し居候得者、該条項廃除せらるれば大いに喜ばるゝことゝ存候、同氏は又間接なりとも渋沢子爵の御消息を知るを喜び可申候、目下の難問解決に当り穏健にして不撓なる同氏の援助は、信頼するに足ることゝ存候

　　I hope you will forgive my not acknowledging at once your postal card and the copy of the magazine "The Friend," containing your article. It came when we were just in the midst of some serious and exacting work in connection with completing the new buildings, and although I read the article promptly, this is my first opportunity to write you about it.
　　I remember very well the incident you describe, and my

 gratitude and amazement at Viscount Shibusawa's insistence upon attending the luncheon, at the cost of so many hours' travel. My recollection is that we first talked of this luncheon in the Plaza Hotel in New York, before he went to Philadelphia to visit Mr. Wanamaker, and then on to Washington. You may recall that we were having an important meeting of the American Advisory Council for St. Luke's scheduled for a given day and hour, and it was the desire of the members of the American Council to meet Viscount Shibusawa, which made me see him personally about it. The Viscount accepted the invitation, and then with characteristic fineness and tenacity of will, he insisted upon keeping the engagement although it meant a whole day on the train, from Washington to New York, and return, with only two hours at the Down Town Association, to meet the Council at luncheon.
　　For me it was a splendid example of courage and steadfast devotion to an accepted obligation. I cannot tell you in words how much Viscount Shibusawa's whole life has reacted to the benefit of my own conception of duty, from the first day I had the honor and pleasure of meeting him. And it is equally true that I cannot tell you in words how much his loss means not only to me personally, but to the welfare of this whole institution.

　　　　　　IMPRESSIONS OF FOREIGN FRIENDS

Dear Dr. Obata:
　　In connection with a host of other friends, I shall always count it a great privilege that I knew Viscount Shibusawa. To know him was to have a deep respect and affection for him. I recall with gratitude his deep interest in, and the great help he gave to, Dr. Teusler's plans for the building of St. Luke's Medical Center in Tokyo. I am sure there must have been times when Dr. Teusler's stout heart would have despaired if it had not been for the friendship and the courage of the Viscount.
　　Of course, I did not know him as well as Dr. Teusler did,

 because, for one reason, Opportunity for fellowship with him was limited to my occasional visits to Japan and his even less frequent visits to the United States.
　　I think of the Viscount as a lover of beauty. I recall one visit to his home when with justifiable pride, he showed me his garden. That beautiful spot marked him, I feel, as a lover of God's creation. I could not but feel that the beauty of nature drew him close to the heart of God, the Creator.
　　I know he was a lover of peace and of his fellowmen. Few men of any nation have done so much to further international fellowship and to produce the condition of heart and mind that makes armed strife between nations impossible.
　　I know he was a man who cherished with gratitude friendships of the past. I remember his telling me that as a boy, he knew Townsend Harris and counted him his friend. When the Viscount came to the United States about 1922 on a mission of international friendship, his first act upon reaching the city of New York, was to go to the cemetery where Townsend Harris had been buried many years before, and place a wreath upon his grave.
　　I know that Viscount was a lover of men, not merely in the mass, but as indiviuals. Among those to whom he showed this side of his noble character was our mutual friend, Dr. Rudolf B. Teusler. In March 1928, Dr. Teusler and I were planning to return to the United States to make a final effort to secure the funds necessary for the building of St. Luke's Medical Center. The evening before we started upon our voyage, Viscount Shibusawa made the long journey from his own home to Dr. Teusler's home in Tsukiji. He talked for a while of Dr. Teusler's hope of what St. Luke's might mean to the people of Japan. When he rose to leave, Viscount Shibusawa clasped Dr. Teusler's hand and said to him : "While you are away I shall be praying for the success of your mission." As they stood there, looking with respect and affection into each other's faces, there came back to my mind those lines of the English poet, Rudyard Kipling :

　　　　Border or breed or birth,
　　　　When two strong men stand face to face,
　　　　Though they come from the ends of the earth."
