AN INTERPRETATION OF THE LIFE OF VISCOUNT SHIBUSAWA by KYUGORO OBATAS [OBATA]
             INTRODUCTION pp. xvi-xvii
             Nov., 1937.
          INTRODUCTION
  ............
The Viscount did not however confine his outlook and nterest to his own nation. He was a true patriot. But so large was his mind and heart that his interests and concern leaped across the national frontiers and made the world's problems and its needs his own. His love for his country and his internationalism were so blended that it took both to give expression to the full measure of the man.
Although he took the whole world into his mind and heart it was the bettering of American-Japanese relations and Japanese-Chinese amity to which he gave himself with crusading zeal. America has never had a truer friend than Viscount Shibusawa. Throughout his long life he left no stone unturned in his efforts to build a bond of understanding and good will between America and Japan. This was one of the major goals of his life.
He was also one of China's most understanding friends. An earnest and consistent follower of Confucius and an ardent student of the Chinese Classics enabled him to look deep into the Chinese soul and comprehend the true inwardness of the Chinese people. He yearned that these two sister nations of Eastern Asia which have had so much in common across the centuries should speedily settle their differences and become a united and mighty force in the building of a better world.
The Viscount had the mind and the mood of a pioneer.

In his own special field as a banker and an industrialist he blazed new trails in many directions. In his interest in woman's education and in the large role he played in the founding of the Japan Women's University he helped to inaugurate a new day for the nations' womanhood.
In the international realm, through his innumerable and intimate contacts with outstanding leaders in practically every nation and his unceasing endeavors to build a world brotherhood, he took his place by the side of those in every land who have pioneered in the interests of world peace and international good will.
