是日栄一、アメリカ合衆国シカゴ基督教青年会会長ダブリュー・エフ・ハイプスヲ、飛鳥山邸ニ招キテ午餐会ヲ催ス。午後、東京基督教青年会幹部ト共ニ、其歓迎茶話会ヲ上野精養軒ニ開ク。

　JAPANESE WELCOME TO PRESIDENT W. F. HYPES
　　　　　　Royal Reception Everywhere
　　"We have been wonderfully received by the Japanese people and if there are any evidences of resentment against Americans, I have not as yet been able to discover an iota," writes W. F. Hypes, President of the Y.M.C.A. of Chicago, who with Mrs. Hypes is taking a trip around the world.
　　Although planned as a vacation trip, Mr. Hypes is being used by the local Y.M.C.A. in every city in the Orient to meet with leading business men to discuss business questions and also the moral and religious problems of young men.

　　On their first day in Japan, Mr. and Mrs. Hypes were entertained at the country home, near Tokyo, of Viscount Shibuzawa, often called the "Harriman of Japan," and who, notwithstanding his eightyfour years, is still, according to Mr. Hypes, a tremendous influence throughout the empire.
　　　　　　　Meets Members of Nobility
　　"After the luncheon where I met many prominent business men and members of the nobility," writes Mr. Hypes, "the Viscount took us for a walk through his beautiful garden. I had met the Viscount on his three last trips to America, the first time about fifteen years ago as a member of the reception committee of the Association of Commerce. He was then Baron Shibuzawa. The party wound up at a summer house, where tea was served and it was here that speech making was in order.
　　"The Viscount has always been a good friend of our country and has devoted his entire life, using his great power in promoting friendly relations, not only with the U.S., but with other foreign countries as well. The Exclusion Act dealt him and others, as broad-minded as himself, a body blow. At the same time, he is counseling patience and hoping that these relations may be greatly improved in the near future.
　　　　　　　　　Commends Ambassador Bancroft
　　"In my reply, I told him I was not in this country to talk political problems in any way, but that I was convinced that there were enough men of influence in both countries, whose good sense and level-headedness would straighten out these matters, which at the moment seem to be so vexatious.
　　"I took the occasion to tell him that the new American ambassador, Mr. Edgar A. Bancroft, of Chicago, was a man in whom they would find not only an extremely brilliant lawyer, but a man far-sighted and extremely level-headed, who has found time in a very busy career, to help materially in developing character and good citizenship, not only in his city, but throughout the country; that in my opinion he was the best man in the U. S., who could have been selected at this time as ambassador to Japan. I suggested to these Japanese leaders that if they would rally around Mr. Bancroft and assist him all they could, they would find that he would help them as much as anyone to solve their problems."

　　At four o'clock, according to the letter, a reception was held for Mr. and Mrs. Hypes. This was followed at 6:30 o'clock with a talk to three hundred department heads of the

 Shirokiya Drygoods Store of Tokyo. At eight o'clock, Mr. Nishino, the manager of this store, and a member of the National Y.M.C.A. Committee entertained the Hypes as guests of honor at a dinner party at the Imperial Hotel.
　　"If our first day in Japan is any indication of what may be expected of us, "concludes Mr. Hypes," I guess we are not going to suffer from ennui."
