My dear Viscount Shibusawa:
　　We are about to publish a Special Edition of The Japan Advertiser in connection with the Sesqui-Centennial International Exposition at Philadelphia. This Special Edition will be a Japan-America number. It will be creditably produced ― printed on art paper and profusely illustrated. It will be constructive in purpose and policy.
　　We plan to publish a number of statements and articles from prominent leaders in Japan and the United States. I should be especially appreciative if you would kindly favor us with a brief article and, if agreeable to you, provide us with a photograph of yourself to use in connection with the article.
　　As the time is short we would appreciate having both the picture and the article in the course of the next two weeks.
　　If you desire, our Mr. Burton Crane will be happy to call upon you at any convenient hour to go into the matter more thoroughly with you and assist you in any way. Any suggestions which you have to make to Mr. Crane will be carried out and will be thoroughly appreciated.
　　I should have been pleased to call in person but unfortunately I have been confined to my bed by illness for some months.

拝啓、ジヤパン・アドヴアータイザー紙は費府に於ける独立百五十年記念博覧会に関連して、近く日米号なる特別号を発行するの計画を有し居候、右はアート紙を用ひて印刷し写真を豊富に挿入し、立派なるものとなすべく目的及政策共に相達し候様致すべく候

日米両国の一流人士のステートメント及び論文を多数掲載の計画に有之候へば、閣下に於せられても簡単なる記事を御寄稿被下、尚ほ御差支無之候はゞ同記事と共に掲載すべき御写真をも賜はり候はゞ幸甚と存候、時は接迫致居候に付、記事・御写真共に二週間以内に頂戴相叶ひ候はゞ難有奉存候
若し御希望に候はゞ、社員バートン・クレーン氏をして御好都合の節拝趨せしむべく候へば、本件につきて更らに貴意を可得、又何かと御援助申上ぐる様取計ひ可申候、クレーン氏に御申聞の件は何なりと取運ばしむべきにより、何卒御申付け被下度候
親しく御伺ひの上御願申上ぐべき筈の処、数ケ月来病後引籠中に付失礼仕候

　　クレーン氏は九月十日午前、飛鳥山邸にて子爵と会談せらる
