My dear Viscount :
　　I was very much interested in reading your statement published in the Trans-Pacific recently, noting your 88th birthday and I wish to heartily congratulate you on your very long and useful life to your nation and to the balance of the world.
　　Just today I received a letter from a mutual friend of ours, Mr. J. S. Hall, now General Passenger Agent of the New York Central Railway, asking me to bespeak for his Vice President, Mr. Webster, a kindly word to you, as Mr. Webster is to visit Japan very soon. He is a very important man in the Railroad field of this country and he would like very much to meet you.
　　You no doubt remember Mr. Hall as he had charge of our train while on the New York Central Railroad during your visit here.

　　I hope this will find both you and the Viscountess in good health and I wish you many, many happy returns of your birthday.

拝啓、益御清適奉賀候、然ば閣下が米寿を迎へられ候に付ては、最近トランス・パシフイツク誌上に公表相成候貴ステートメントを拝読仕り、大に興味を覚え候、貴国民及び世界の其他の諸国民の為め貢献せる閣下の貴重なる御長寿に対し、衷心より御祝詞申上候
目下紐育中央鉄道旅客課総長にして閣下の御友人なるジエー・エス・ホール氏より、本日只今来書有之候処、同鉄道会社副社長ウエブスター氏は近々貴国漫遊の途に登らるゝ由にて、同氏のため小生より閣下に宜しく御口添申上候様との事に御座候、ウエブスター氏は我米国の鉄道界に於ける甚だ重要の人物にして、閣下に拝光の栄を得ることを切望致居候、ホール氏は閣下当地へ御来遊の節、紐育中央鉄道御利用中、御乗用の列車掛りを勤められし次第に候へば、必ず御記憶の事と存候
小生は時折閣下の該旅行に多少なりとも関係せる人々と会合致す事有之候が、何れも彼の御来遊が日米両国の国交に及ぼしたる効果を熱心に礼讃致し、一同其功績の偉大なりしを感佩致居る次第に御座候
閣下及び令夫人御揃ひ御健勝の事と存候、此上とも幾久敷目出度き御誕辰を御迎へ被遊候様奉祈上候

My dear Viscount :
　　Before leaving Japan I desire to acknowledge your most cordial letter of Jan. 26th, with which I received three artistic

 and most interesting scrolls of Nikko.
　　Our meeting on Saturday last was a very happy epoch in my life. I am not thinking so much of the circumstances that precluded a more extended contact between us as I am of my good fortune in being able to meet you, in the limited time at my disposal.
　　There was nothing needed to remind me of my meeting with you and my visit to Japan, as they of themselves will always remain fresh in my memory but the invaluable scrolls will intensify my recollections.
　　For your good wishes I am indeed grateful.
　　My visit to Japan has been enlightening, and I am leaving with a better knowledge of your wonderful country. The better I know it the more favorably I am impressed.

前土曜日拝光の栄を得候は小生の生涯中此上もなき幸福に有之候、小生は悠々御高風に接するを得ざりし事情を悔むよりも、寧ろ短時間の滞在中に御引見を蒙るに至りし幸運を喜ぶ者に候
貴国訪問中閣下に御面会の機会を得しは、自然小生の記憶に絶えず新たなるべく候間、記念物に依つて追想を促がさるべき必要更に無之候得共、御恵与に与り候此珍重すべき賜物は、小生の追懐を一層強烈ならしむる事と存候
御鄭重なる閣下の御挨拶に対しては衷心より奉深謝候
小生は今回の訪問によりて啓発せられ、驚嘆すべき貴国を一層善く理解して帰国致すことを欣快に存候、貴国を諒解すればする程益好印象を増すのみに有之候
