dressed to me in care of the New York office.
I have read this cable with deep emotion and increased admiration for our dear friend the Viscount Shibusawa. In the midst of the unparalleled catastrophe that befell the cities of Japan there you are to be found in the midst of that scene of desolation encouraging, rallying and inspiring your countrymen in the work of rebuilding their ruined cities ; consoling those in sorrow and distress, helping to their feet again those who had fallen amid the ruins, and all the while unmindful of the weight of your four score years while working as if you were a young man to help and save others. From the first news which we received of this overwhelming calamity your name was on everyone's lips with the anxious inquiry, "I wonder if anything has happened to Viscount Shibusawa?" If you had been a citizen of Seattle the inquiry for your health and safety could not have been more earnest and anxious than it was here, and I am sure the same anxious feeling for your safety was felt and expressed from the Pacific to the Atlantic.
We have no doubt here that Tokyo and Yokohama will soon recover from this disaster and will become greater, more beautiful and more enduring than ever. Cities are built and made great by the indomitable spirit of man, a spirit that has never been better illustrated than in your own wonderful career.
May a kind fate prolong your life and strength for many years, to be a help, a comfort and an encouragement to your own people and an example to people everywhere.
            Yours very truly,
             (Signed) Thomas Burke
