是月以降、関東大震火災ニ対シアメリカ合衆国及ビ其他ノ国ノ栄一ノ関係団体及ビ友人ヨリ、栄一ニ見舞及ビ災害救援ノ申出アリ。栄一其都度其厚意ヲ謝シ、希望ヲ回答ス。

My dear Viscount Shibusawa:
　　I enclose copy of letter to Mr. Aneha which explains itself. I was very happy when I heard that you were safe and truly hope that the shock of this terrible occurrence has not been too much of a strain. You have many friends in Rochester who remember your visit here with great pleasure and are naturally very solicitous of your well-being. I hope that none of the friends whom I met in Japan have lost their lives. No doubt most of them have suffered heavy material losses.

Dear Mr. Aneha:
　　On my return home from Alaska I find your letter of September 18th, with copy of cablegram from Viscount Shibusawa.
　　Being way up in the mountains of Alaska hunting I did not hear of the earthquake disaster for about two weeks, and no details until about a month after. When I returned home I found that our Community Chest, of which I am President, had contributed $25,000 to the Relief Fund and announced its intention to contribute a further like sum if necessary. We have since been informed, I believe, that this latter sum will not be required.
　　The sympathy for your people in their terrible distress is universal in this community, as is our admiration for the promptness and resolution with which they have undertaken

閣下の御無事の由を承知致し欣喜罷在候、今回の災害の為め甚しき影響を蒙られざりし事を念願罷在候、当ロチエスターに於ける閣下の多くの友人は閣下の御来訪を記憶し、一同御安全を衷心より祈願仕候、小生が日本に於て面会せる友人諸氏は財産上には被害ありしならんも一人として死去せる人可無之ことを祈居候　敬具

小生アラスカ旅行より帰来の節九月十八日附の貴翰並に渋沢子爵よりの電報写正に入手拝見仕候
小生は約二週間アラスカの山中に在つて遊猟中なりし為め地震の報知を知らず、而も詳細の報道は一ケ月を経過せる後に至りて漸く承知致候様の次第に有之候、小生が右旅行より帰米致候節、小生が会長たる社会事業金庫の中より義捐金二万五千弗を寄附し、将来必要生ずるに於ては更らに同額を支出可致筈の由承知致候、乍併後に至り此の必要のなかるべしとの通知を募金委員より受けし由に有之候
今回の災害に対する我国の同情は非常のもの有之、其れと同時に貴国民の復興事業に対する敏捷と決意とに深く敬服罷在候　敬具
