Colonel Theodore Roosevelt
  Oyster Btay
  Long Island.
Dear Sir:
I am very glad of my having herewith the opportunity of writing you these few lines.
The box, which contains the picture-rolls illustrating the history of Tosho-Gu, which I had the pleasure of presenting to you when I had seen you last time in《(is)》 America, in the one made for the temporary use only; and this time, as I have made the special lacquered box which is good for permanent use, I had sent it to you, by S. S. Chiyo-Maru, which sailed from Yokohama on the 5th inst. I have, however, arranged to forward it to the hands of Mr. Avery, the manager of Toyo Kisen Kaisha, San Francisco; and so, he will deliver it to you as soon as he receives it.
With kindest regards, I beg to remain,
             Yours ever sincerely

The Hon. Theodore Roosevelt,
  Oyster Bay, N.Y.
My dear Sir:
I feel very sorry to learn from Mr. Avery of San Francisco that the lacquered box, which he had sent to you on my behalf, was found practically destroyed, because of insufficient package; and by way of making up for it, I am herewith sending another box to Mr. Avery, who will, in due time, transmit it to you.
This time, the content is carefully packed here in Tokio in a strong wooden box, and so, when it reaches to you through the hands of Mr. Avery, you will very likely find it all right.
If, however, any damage was found, I hope you will kindly write me in regard to that effect.
With great respect and best wishes, I beg to remain,
            Yours ever faithfully,
                  渋沢栄一(署名)

My dear Baron Shibusawa:
Indeed, my dear sir, I am sorry that you should have been informed of the accident to the lacquered box. I felt that it was Mr. Avery's fault, and I wished him to be informed.
I trust I need not say that one of my pleasantest memories will always be the occasion when I had the good fortune to have you in my house.
With hearty good wishes for you and your country, I am,
                Sincerely yours,
Baron E. Shibusawa,
  No. 2 Kabutocho,
  Tokio, Japan.
