午前九時養育院ニ抵リ米国人モット氏ニ会見ス、モット氏は米国青年会ノ事務ニ関シ来航セシモノナリ院中ヲ一覧セシメ且其沿革ヲ詳述スモットヨリ青年ニ関スル意見ヲ諮問セラルヽニ付近来マデ我邦ノ青年ニハ政治熱ニ傾クノ弊アリシカ今日ハ大ニ減却セシヲ覚フ《（ユ）》、然リト云トモ志操堅実ナラサルハ我邦青年ノ大欠点ト思惟スル旨ヲ答フ　○下略

　Dear Mr. Obata:
　　I have learned with the most lively satisfaction that you are preparing a biography of eminent Japanese leader, Viscount E.Shibusawa. I can think of the story of no life in the Orient which will be awaited with keener interest, and perused with more pleasure by discerning people throughout the West, as well as the East, than the life of this man which so abounded in helpfulness to mankind. Among his many distinguished services I can think of none of greater timeliness and at the same time of more prophetic or far-reaching significance than what he accomplished to promote peace and good-will among the nations.
　　Viscount Shibusawa was an outstanding example of international-mindedness. His spacious mind took in not only his own great and expanding country but likewise the other nations of the world, both near and far. In my conversations with him I was always impressed by his intimate knowledge of the background of different nations, of their dominant characteristics, of their possibilities ,and above all of their good traits. To my mind he understood the nations of the West better than the leaders of western countries as a rule understand those of the Orient.
　　Viscount Shibusawa had not only an international mind but, what I sometimes think is even more important, an international heart. He made the impression upon me as actually sympathizing with the aspirations and higher ambitions of different peoples. He was genuinely sympathetic with reference to the burdens they were bearing, and was ever responsive to the voice of human need, no matter in what quarter of the world that need was revealed. His generous cooperation with great unselfish projects was proverbial. Moreover he made foreigners feel truly at home in Japan. I shall ever treasture in grateful memory my different visits to his beautiful home and the great encouragement he gave me in my various missions of service to the youth of the world.
　　This great citizen of the world combined international action with his international feeling and international thinking. In other words, he had an international will as

well as an international mind and an international heart. He not only revealed intellectual comprehension of what is involved in promoting right international relations, and a heart large and sensitive enough to feel for other peoples and to covet their friendship, but also strength of purpose to bring about right understanding and right feeling between the nations and races of mankind. He thus had the rare quality of combining with the vision which commanded him the steady action of the will. He did not shrink from taking initiative and from assuming responsibility for clearing up misunderstandings and ensuring practical and fruitful cooperation between the people of different nations.
　　　　It is a privilege indeed to pay this simple tribute to this noble character whose friendship I valued more deeply than I can express.

　親愛なる小畑様
　著名な日本の指導者である渋沢子爵の伝記を準備されている由、大層うれしく存じます。洋の東西を問わず、心ある人々が、人類にとつて極めて有益な示唆に富むものとして、これほどその出版を待ち、一読を楽しみにしている東洋人の伝記を、他に思い浮かべることはできません。彼はいろいろ多くの立派な奉仕をされましたが、とりわけ諸国家間の平和と善意を増進すべく尽した努力は、極めて時宜に適したものであり、また将来を見透す力を持つており他に影響するところが大きかつたのでありました。
　渋沢子爵は国際的な視野をもつた傑出した人物でありました。彼はたんに偉大なそして拡張を続けていた自国ばかりでなく、遠近を問わず世界の他の諸国家にも広く思いをいたしたのであります。彼と話していると、いつでも私は、彼が諸国家の背景のことや、それぞれの国家のきわだつた特質や、その将来、なかんずく各国家の国民性について詳しく知つておられるのに感心させられました。彼は西洋諸国のことを実によく理解しており、その理解の程度は、西洋諸国家の指導者が東洋諸国について一般に理解している以上のものであつたように思われます。
　渋沢子爵はたんに国際事情に精通していたばかりでなく、時には一層重要だと思われる、国際的な豊かな愛情を持つておられました。彼は、いろいろな民衆が抱いている希望や、向上心に心から共鳴しているようでありましたし、彼等の重荷に耐えている姿に全く同情してお

られました。また世界のどこであろうとも人間の窮乏の声が明らかにされると、それに耳を傾けたのであります。さらに利己的でない立派な計画に対してなした彼の物惜しみしない協力は折紙つきのものでした。加えて彼は日本を訪れた外国人達を歓迎しくつろぎを与えてくれたのであります。私は彼の美しい家庭を屡々訪問しましたが、これはいつまでも快よい思い出となつて残るでありましようし、当時世界の青年のために様々の奉仕をしていた私を勇気づけてくれました。
　この世界の偉大な一市民は、国際的な豊かな感情と深い思考を持つていたばかりでなくそれをもとに、国際的な幅広い活動をしたのであります。いゝかえますと、国際的な深い洞察力と豊かな愛情に加えて国際的な広幅い活動意欲をも持つておられたのであります。彼は正しい、国際関係を推進する結果何が得られるかを十分見通しておりましたし、彼の豊かな愛情は寛大でしかも敏感でしたから、他の民衆に思いをはせ、彼等の友愛を熱心に求めました。またそればかりでなく、国家間や民族間相互に正しい理解と愛情を持ち来たらすべく強い意欲のあることを明らかにしました。しかも彼はその意欲を広い視野から着実に実践活動に移していくという類い稀な才能を持つておられました、彼はしりごみもせずイニシヤテイフをとり、責任をもつて他国の民衆との間にみられる誤解の一掃に努力し、彼等の間に現実的な実り多き協力をえたのであります。
　このような高邁な性格をもたれた同氏にさゝやかながら推讚の辞を送ることは、筆紙に尽し難いほどの友情にあずかつた私にとつて身にあまる光栄であります。
