是月以降、関東大震火災ニ対シアメリカ合衆国及ビ其他ノ国ノ栄一ノ関係団体及ビ友人ヨリ、栄一ニ見舞及ビ災害救援ノ申出アリ。栄一其都度其厚意ヲ謝シ、希望ヲ回答ス。

My dear Viscount :
　　You will probably recall having met Mr. B. Matsuzawa, one of our secretaries of our Nuuanu Y. M. C. A. Mr. Matsuzawa is going to Japan by steamer today under the auspices of our Association to assist in every way he possibly can in the relief work for those who have suffered from the great disaster which recently overtook Japan. He will also convey our deepest sympathy to all those who have suffered from this catastrophe.
　　Also, we are sending a small sum to be used in the relief work. We are sorry not to send a larger sum through him, but practically every one here has contributed through the Red Cross and as you know Hawaii has raised in the neighborhood of 500,000 yen under the auspices of the Red Cross Association and we hope this tribute of our sympathy and interest in your country and countrymen will prove of some assistance.
　　I received two letters from you since the last of June but have been on the mainland since the latter part of June and only returned home yesterday, hence I have been unable to answer your communications but will endeavor to do so at an early date.
　　I sincerely trust that you have not suffered any bodily injury in the disaster and that you have not lost any of your relatives or friends. We all sympathize most deeply with those who have been called Upon to suffer so severely, but sincerely trust Japan and her people will be able to rise above this disaster which has overtaken her.

拝啓、ヌアヌ基督教青年会の幹事松沢氏とは已ニ御知合の間柄と存候氏は最近日本を襲いし大惨害の罹災者救護の為、当青年会の代表者として本日出帆日本に向はれ候、私共は救護事業に用いらるべき金員僅少乍ら同氏に托し御送附申上候、此以上の金額を御送附致難きは誠に遺憾に候へども、当地の人々は赤十字社を通じて五十万円の寄附に応募致し候、貴国及貴国民に対して此種の同情を表明致候ことは親善の為に幾分貢献致す処可有之と存候、去六月以降再度の御芳書に相接し候へども、六月下旬以来米本土に参り居り、昨日漸く帰来致候様の都合に付、御返事延引致候へども可成至急取運度と存居候
閣下には何の御障りも無之候のみならず、御一族・御友人等も無事なることゝ存候、不幸なる罹災者に対しては深厚なる同情を表し、且つ日本及日本国民が大なる勇気を以て復興せんことを祈りて止まざる者に有之候　敬具

　　I was very much pleased to receive thru Consul Yamasaki your letter of September 13th and to learn from it that you had escaped injury during the recent terrible earthquake which visited your city. The whole world sympathizes with the Japanese people in this terrible calamity which has befallen them. It is hard to understand why such terrible events happen, and why so many innocent people have to suffer so seriously. The Japanese people have certainly shown a remarkable spirit in the way in which they have met this great disaster and are bending every energy to restore their former

九月十三日附の貴翰山崎総領事を通じて正に入手難有拝見仕候、今回貴国に勃発せる大震災に際し、閣下には無事難を免れられ候趣欣賀此事に存候、今回の大災害に対して全世界は貴国民に満腔の同情を表居候、天は何故に如此大災害を日本に降し、如此多数無辜の国民を苦しむるものなるか、私共は諒解する能はざる処に御座候、日本国民は此大惨害に臨むに必すや沈勇を以てし、旧時に優る都市の復興の為に勇往邁進せられ居ることと存候

Dear Mr. Atherton,
　　Please accept my deep gratitude for your kind sympathy concerning the great earthquake. My Asukayama home escaped destruction, although several parts of the house were damaged. My office of Kabuto-cho was torn to pieces and later burnt down. I was present in the office at the time when the earthquake took place, but fortunately sustained no harm whatever and ever since the 2nd day of the month, I have been striving to help relieve sufferers in cooperation with others. You will be also pleased to hear that all the members of my family are safe.

拝啓、然は過般の大震災に付ては、早速御懇切に御見舞被下、御厚情難有奉存候、飛鳥山拙宅は倒壊を免れ候も、相当損害を受け、又兜町事務所は崩壊の後全焼致候、当日小生は同所に出勤中なりしも、幸に無事避難する事を得、二日以来震災善後の為め微力を尽し居候間、御省念被下度候、尚家族一同も無事に候間、是亦御安神被下度候
