My dear Viscount Shibusawa,
　　Permit the distractions of a hurried traveler to explain (though they do not excuse) the long delay in acknowledging your very great courtesy to me on the occasion of my visit to Tokyo, just a month ago. I had scarcely expected to be able to meet you and my other friends in Tokyo in a time of so great confusion, but I find that even an earthquake can not shatter the foundations of Japanese courtesy. I shall not fail to report to our colleagues of the Japanese Reltaions Committee in San Francisco the luncheon and interesting conference we had at the Bankers' Club in the midst of the ruined city. And I am sure that among the compensations of the great disaster is an already better understanding between our two peoples.

拝啓
今より約一ケ月前東京を訪れ候際には多大の御厚意を忝し難有、旅中匆々の際失礼乍ら玆に謹んで御礼申上候、大混雑の際に付閣下を始め友人諸氏に面会することは到底不可能と存候処、事実は然らずして、日本人の礼儀の基礎には地震の如きを以てしては到底粉砕すべからざるものなることを発見致候、小生は帰国の上焦土の東京の銀行倶楽部に於て催せられたる午餐会及其節の談話につきて、桑港の日本関係委員に報告可致候、猶大災害の報償として、日米両国民の間には已に諒解の増進せるものあるを見、欣喜罷在候、右乍延引御礼申上度如此御座候　敬具
