拝啓、益御清適奉賀候、然ハ去大正九年東京に於て開催の日米問題協議会に、ヴアンダーリツプ氏一行に加はり渡来したるダーウヰン・ピー・キングスレイ氏の令息には、今般華燭の典を挙げられ候由にて、渋沢子爵を始め阪谷・服部・堀越本会々員諸氏に通知有之候処、右通知に接したる各位には此際日本キモノを右祝として送呈しては如何哉との事に候間、貴台にも御同様の通知を被受右取扱に御同意に候はゞ何卒御回示被下度候、御一人の御負担は凡金参拾円以内の予定に候

拝啓、益御清適奉賀候、然ば予て紐育キングスレー氏令息の婚儀に関し、同氏より通知を受けられたる貴台其他の御人々より祝品を贈呈致候事に相成、爾来種々選択に努め居候処、今般柴田是真氏の高弟泰山氏作金蒔絵の額「森の鳩」（縦二尺三寸横二尺八寸）は、婚礼の祝品として至極適当の物と思はれ候に付ては、同品購入の上贈呈しては如何かと存じ候、御意見如何に候哉、御回答被下度候、尤も代金の義は

Dear Mr. Kingsley,
　　After a regrettable delay due to circumstances connected with the choice of a suitable material expression of our sentiments of regard and felicitation, we have now the great pleasure of conveying to you our hearty congratulations upon the happy marriage of your beloved son, Mr. Darwin P. Kingsley, Jr. to Miss Heywood Mason Butler of New Jersey, the announcement of which you kindly honoured us with at the time.
　　In token of our sincere joy at the good news and of our high regard to the happy young couple, we beg herewith to ask your favour kindly to present to them in our names a gold lacquer picture of "Doves in Woods" done by Taizan, a prominent disciple of the great master Zeshin. It was awarded a high prize at the Grand Exposition held a few years ago by the National Lacquer Workers' Association of Japan, for which it was specially prepared.
　　Wishing them all the happiness and prosperity in the world in their united life, and with kind regards to your good lady and yourself.

My dear Viscount Shibusawa:
　　I am entirely at a loss for words with which to express my thanks on behalf of my son, Darwin P. Kingsley, Jr., and his wife, for the magnificent wedding present sent by you and a group of something like twenty-five other distinguished Japanese. The gold lacquer picture by Taizan has been safely received and in due course my son and his wife will send proper acknowledgments to all the generous friends who united in making the gift.
　　As I read these names over, many, many happy scenes arise in my mind, dating back to 1920. The signers are almost a reproduction of the membership of the Welcome Committee which so magnificently received the Vanderlip Group a little over seven years gao. You pay me a tremendous compliment.
　　The young people will of course keep this marvellous picture all their lives and cherish it amongst their most valued possessions. I doubt, however, whether it will ever seem as precious to them as it does to me. To be remembered after seven years by yourself and the distinguished men whose names are attached to your letter of the 4th of April is little less than overpowering. As I read the names over, beginning with your own, followed by that of Viscount Kentaro Kaneko, a different picture arises in my mind because I have some memory of substantially every name at some place or in connection with some event. I have

 been very proud during these seven years to remember that I knew so many distinguished citizens of Japan. I had no reason to suppose that they remembered me, outside possibly yourself, Baron Furukawa, Viscount Kaneko, Mr. Inouye and Dr. Dan, and I am therefore all the more moved and touched by your action.
　　In my mail this morning I find copy of cable which you sent to Mr. Brockman, responding to the joint cable which a group of us sent to you on your eighty-eighth birthday.
　　Again for myself and for Mrs. Kingsley who has always cherished the fondest memories of Japan, I am, with thanks,

P.S. I am sure the young people will write a separate letter to each of the men whose names are signed to your note of the 4th, and I therefore will confine myself to this note to you. At the same time, as you have opportunity, I shall appreciate it if you will convey to each one of these gentlemen the fact that I have written to you and that I profoundly appreciate their remembrance of me through the beautiful gift they have made to my son and daughter.

此等の氏名を一覧して一九二〇年の旧時を回想し、多くの愉快なる光景を想起致候、署名せる方々は約七年前ヴアンダーリツプ氏の一行を華々しく歓迎せられたる歓迎委員の顔振れと殆と同一なるを承知致候閣下の御厚意は真に忝く奉存候
伜夫妻は此の驚異に値する絵画を終生保存可致は勿論、又最も貴重なる所有物の一として珍蔵可致候、乍併右絵画が小生にとりて貴重なるが如く彼等両人にも常に貴重なるへきかを疑ひ居候

ほ記憶せられたるは感激措く能はさる処に御座候、閣下の御署名に始り金子堅太郎子爵の署名之に次き、其他諸名士の署名せられたるを見て、小生は幾多の異りたる場面を想ひ出候、そは場所により、又出来事により、各異りたる氏名を記憶致候為めに御座候、過去七年間小生は日本の多数の名士を存じ上げ候事を誇と致候、貴閣下・古河男爵・金子子爵・井上氏並に団博士以外の方々が小生を御記憶被下候義を想像すへき理由無之候間、其れ丈けに閣下の御好意に対し、感銘深きもの有之候
閣下の米寿祝賀の為めに小生等一同より差上げたる祝電に対し、ブロツクマン氏に宛て発信せられたる御返電の写を今朝の来書中に見出し候、日本の楽しき思ひ出を常に楽み居候荊妻と共に、重ねて閣下に感謝の微意を表し奉り候　敬具
